Cardamom tea, known locally as *chai elachi* or simply *masala chai* in South Asia, is a spiced black tea infusion where green cardamom pods are the defining aromatic. Its origins trace to the Indian subcontinent, where tea was traditionally brewed with milk, sugar, and a blend of warming spices. The dish has since spread globally, often adapted as a caffeine-free herbal tisane or a sweetened iced beverage.

A great version achieves a delicate balance: the tea should be robust enough to carry the cardamom’s floral, eucalyptus-like notes without becoming bitter. Freshly crushed pods—rather than pre-ground powder—are essential, and the tea is typically simmered with milk to create a creamy, fragrant brew. The best examples are neither cloyingly sweet nor overly spicy, allowing the cardamom to shine.
