Learn how to make Sanshoku Dango, the three-color dango from the anime Sailor Moon. These sweet rice dumplings are made with mochiko, sugar, and natural coloring, then boiled and skewered.

Method

  1. In a bowl, combine mochiko (glutinous rice flour), sugar, and water. Knead until the dough is slightly dry and elastic.
  2. Divide the dough into three portions: one for white (no coloring), one for red (add natural red food coloring), and one for green (add matcha powder).
  3. For each color, form small balls of about 15 grams each.
  4. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Drop in the dango balls and cook for 5–7 minutes, until they float and are puffed up.
  5. Drain the dango and immediately cool them in cold water (thermal shock, called 'hikkashi' in Japanese).
  6. Skewer the dango on bamboo sticks in the order: green, white, red (or as desired).
  7. Serve.
