Hafız Mustafa 1864 is a historic chain where locals go for quality sweets, and the baklava and künefe are exceptional.
Dishes mentioned
Baklava
I ordered different types of baklava. Baklava is made of 24 layers of buttered filo dough, filled with chopped dried fruit, then soaked in a mixture of sugar, orange blossom water, and sucane. I got four: two with walnuts and two with pistachio. Served with their secret-recipe milk-based sauce, celler berry. It's heavenly. With bitter Turkish coffee, it's a perfect match — it's so sweet and that classic small but intense sweet that satisfies like a whole slice of cake. This one is practically all pistachio paste. And the sauce? What a treat! It tastes like fior di latte.
Künefe
Künefe — a famous dessert throughout the Middle East made with kataifi dough, stringy cheese, topped with excellent honey and pistachio. What does it taste like? Turkey. It's really good. The kataifi dough is crunchy, the cheese is neutral and perfect for this dessert, pairing beautifully with honey and pistachio. Super sweet, super crunchy, super stringy — everything super. And we paired it with the Turkish version of clotted cream — it was too light, so it works. A bit of clotted cream. Everything I described plus the taste of butter. Top combo.
Lokum
This is a lokum — a sweet so good it deserves a fundamental role in the Chronicles of Narnia. This one is with pistachio.
