The story

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele remains a Napolitan icon, celebrated for its focused menu of classic Margherita and Pizza Fritta at refreshingly low prices. The Frama Twins described their first experience as "fantastic," praising the "super light dough and great mozzarella" on an enormous Margherita, even if some edges arrived a bit burnt. Francesco Zini sums it up: it's "a true emblem of Neapolitan pizza tradition."

Expect crowds—the queues are famously long, so Alex Mark Travel advises visiting during off-peak hours. While one reviewer preferred New York-style pizza, the consensus is clear: Da Michele delivers simple, deeply flavorful pizzas without pretense. For an authentic taste of Napoli's finest, this no-frills spot earns its 4.3-star reputation.

What diners say

Synthesized from 33 Google reviews · tap an aspect for the detail

Diners consistently praise the pizza for its high-quality ingredients, light dough, and authentic Neapolitan style, often calling it among the best they've had. The value is also widely appreciated, with many noting the low price for such a large pizza. A recurring gentle reservation is that the pizza can be quite soft and saucy, which may surprise those expecting a firmer, drier style, and the wait times, while often deemed worth it, can be long.

Pizza Quality

The pizza is widely celebrated for its excellent dough, fresh ingredients, and authentic flavor. Many reviewers describe it as the best pizza they've ever had, highlighting the light, soft crust and high-quality mozzarella and tomato sauce.

Value

At around €6-8, the pizza is considered a great deal for the size and quality. Diners frequently mention the low price as a pleasant surprise, especially given the fame of the venue.

Wait Time & Queue

Long lines are expected, but many find the wait manageable or worth it. Some note that the queue for takeaway moves quickly, and there is a system for dine-in that can be confusing but ultimately works. A few feel the wait is too long for what they received.

Service

Staff are generally described as friendly, attentive, and welcoming. However, a few reviewers mention that service can be brusque or that tipping is requested, which some find off-putting.

Portion Size

The pizzas are noted to be large, often described as 'enormous' or 'gigantic,' making them suitable for sharing. This is seen as a positive aspect by most.

Tourist Experience

The venue is recognized as a popular tourist spot, with many visitors drawn by its fame. Some appreciate the experience, while others feel it is overly touristy and not necessarily better than other local pizzerias.

AI summary of what 6 dish mentions say about the food

Reviewers rave about the zeppola fritta, a pillowy, fried dough that steals the show. The overall vibe is one of rustic, joyful simplicity, where classic Neapolitan flavors shine.

I'm trying the most famous pizza in Italy at this place they call the temple of pizza. They pump out 1,500 pizzas a day and it goes from oven to table in 90 seconds. The craziest thing is they don't cut it. The dough is good, and the tomatoes and mozzarella are very fresh, but Neapolitan style pizza has a ceiling — it gets very soupy and the dough is so flimsy. In no way is this close to a top 25 pizza I've ever had. All of the top 20 pizza in New York City absolutely blows this out of the water. I absolutely think the pizza in New York is 10 times better than this.
Jack's Dining Room 👎
The pizza is extremely thin, topped with plenty of Fior di latte cheese, and it's huge — going over the plate and on the table. They may have become a tourist go-to place, but they still make an excellent Neapolitan pizza. Properly baked at the bottom with all those freckles on the crust. The crust is almost non-existent, so you can eat everything — the whole slice. It's really thin, really light. There's plenty of cheese, the sauce is tasty, a little bit sweet and acidic the way it should be, and it definitely tastes better than I expected. The dough is also excellent — very thin, very light, very easy to eat. The price is quite good — only €6 for this huge pizza. But waiting in queue for an hour? I don't think it's worth it. Come in off-peak hours.

The pizza is huge, really thin, and the dough is super light. You can taste the tomato and especially the mozzarella — the mozzarella is what stands out the most. I've always seen this texture in videos and wanted to try it, and now I'm finally eating it for the first time. Some parts are a bit burnt on the edges, so I remove those because I don't like the bitter taste, but overall it's delicious. I'm really emotional about it.

Primavera is a pastry shop in Naples famous for its zeppole, with both baked and fried versions, and also offers giant, baroque-filled ones.

Let's taste the baked one first. Good, less sweet than the ones we make in Abruzzo. Maybe we can manage to eat two giant ones. Truly a zeppola fit for a king.

    • Zeppola Fritta

Fried zeppole are much harder to find in Abruzzo, so we take advantage and taste them. And now I'll tell you something shocking: I prefer the baked one, it seems lighter, more balanced. But this one is also a fine zeppola. Saint Joseph would be happy.
