The story

Tucked away on Via Cesare Battisti in Taranto, Panificio Mazzini is the kind of neighborhood bakery that inspires pilgrimages. Local creator Franchino Er Criminale calls it "a fantastic bakery" where for just €6 you can score a spread that includes "incredible rustici"—the best he's ever eaten—alongside a "magic focaccia" and a good panzerotto. The kitchen earns enthusiastic thumbs-up for a full lineup: from the Focaccia con Pomodori Carciofini e Funghi and Focaccia con Mortadella to fried options like Panzerotto and Fritto, plus a sweet Dolce con Crema e Amarena. With a stellar 4.8-star rating, this casual, takeout-friendly spot has clearly earned its status as a local favorite.

What makes Mazzini stand out is the sheer value and quality of its street-food classics. Franchino's verdict on the rustici—“the best I've ever eaten”—is no small praise in a city famous for its baked goods. Whether you're grabbing a Focaccia con Mortadella on the go or settling in for a savory fritto, this bakery delivers the kind of satisfying, no-fuss eats that define Taranto’s casual dining scene. It’s exactly the sort of place you’d want to know about before your next visit.

Reviewers rave about Panificio Mazzini's Rustici, a savory puff pastry filled with creamy béchamel and ham, calling it a perfect, flaky bite. The overall vibe is one of unpretentious, soul-warming comfort food that feels like a genuine taste of local tradition.

The rustici are the best I've ever eaten in my whole life. The baking is perfect. For €6 I got different ones, including one with olives. They make your eyes roll back.

A fantastic bakery where for €6 you get incredible rustici, a magic focaccia, and good panzerotto — the best rustici I've ever eaten.

    Dishes mentioned

    • Focaccia con Pomodori Carciofini e Funghi

For €6 I got a focaccia with tomatoes, artichokes and mushrooms. The artichoke is from a jar, I don't love that, but the tomato is good. Despite the jarred stuff, it's magic. The dough is good, the baking is good, the ingredients are abundant. Quality is a bit less but it's a magic focaccia for €6.

    • Focaccia con Mortadella

I also got a focaccia with mortadella. The mortadella is a bit scarce, I would have put more.

    • Fritto (Panzerotto)

The fried stuff is cold. Usually they make it fresh, but here they had it all already fried and gave it to me cold. The dough melts in the mouth though, it's very good even cold.

    • Rustici

The rustici are the best I've ever eaten in my whole life. The baking is perfect. For €6 I got different ones, including one with olives. They make your eyes roll back.

    • Panzerotto

The panzerotto is good, makes your eyes roll back.
